An
ammonia synthesis catalyst should be selected according to the ammonia converter design, operating conditions, synthesis gas composition and required performance. Model selection should not be based on the previous catalyst designation alone.
For an existing ammonia plant, the following information is normally required:
1. Ammonia converter type, internals and catalyst bed arrangement;
2. Operating pressure and inlet/outlet temperature range;
3. Synthesis gas composition, including the H₂:N₂ ratio and impurity levels;
4. Gas flow rate and space velocity;
5. Catalyst bed volume, particle-size requirement and allowable pressure drop;
6. Current catalyst condition, service history and operating issues;
7. Target production capacity, ammonia concentration and expected catalyst service life;
8. Catalyst loading, start-up and reduction requirements.
